Who is Driveline Athletics?

Driveline Athletics is owned and operated by Kyle Boddy.

Kyle - Clean Warmups

Kyle Boddy formed Driveline Baseball in 2008 as a side company to work with his successful pitching mechanics and training blog, Driveline Mechanics (now offline). Not satisfied with the basic level of coaching made available by mainstream coaches, Kyle studied research papers and exercise science to develop a specific philosophy to prevent and treat youth pitching injuries. The result? Not a single one of Kyle’s clients has suffered an arm injury, and many have come back from debilitating overuse injuries (UCL rupture, labrum tears) to pitch successfully once again.

After training his first group of clients successfully, he decided to expand the company in 2009 to cover general physical training. He has taken and passed the National Pitching Association‘s comprehensive online pitching mechanics test. He will be enrolling at Fort Hayes State University to finish his undergraduate degree in Health and Human Performance.

Driveline Athletics was formed in 2010 to officially handle the strength and conditioning training of the Driveline family of companies. We are interested in training all types of athletes – football players, baseball players, hockey players, and athletes of all varieties require a solid base of strength, special attention to mobility/flexibility issues, speed/agility work, and conditioning for improved endurance. Our clients do not follow one regimented program – they will have their special individual needs attended to depending on their sport of choice.

What are your general philosophies?

All athletes need to be proficient in all ten of the fitness domains:

  • Endurance
  • Stamina
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Power
  • Speed
  • Agility
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Accuracy

What’s important to note is that Strength is the rising tide that lifts all boats. By improving strength, many of the other important domains of fitness automatically improve as a result. For example – athletes who improve their squat and deadlift over the course of a few months will notice markedly improved local muscle endurance in their legs and back when running long distances. They will also have a quicker first step when stealing a base, running their receiver routes, taking off on a breakaway, or positioning themselves to pin their opponent. They will be more balanced on stable and unstable surfaces, and they will be more powerful when they need to drive their opponent off the line.

We pay special attention to all the domains of fitness, of course – our athletes perform box jumps, sprints, sled pushes/pulls, self-myofascial release, flexibility/mobility work, and rate of force development exercises, but it’s important to remember that strength is the base for many of these activities.

Our preferred training protocol has small groups of athletes working together with Kyle three to four times a week to achieve their goals. By working multiple times per week, they can focus on different topics of fitness without being in the gym for 3 hours, and by working with small groups, they have external motivation to push themselves harder and provide support to their workout partners.

I have been training with Coach Boddy since little league. He has taken me step by step, in slow and consistent progress to throwing with clean yet productive and successful mechanics. His mechanics are not based on personal experience or bias but on grounded science and his own personal research.

He takes an extremely analytical approach to pitching and thoroughly has explained to me why we incorporate certain methods and motions into our mechanics in a very comprehendible way. In addition his mastery of video analysis and use of high-speed camera footage has shown me great visible evidence for the success of his mechanics and has given me direction for where I still need improvement. His safe pitching techniques has kept my arm from hurting since I began to grasp and was able to practice his pitching concepts.

Kyle has no personal stakes in the final outcome of me—his student, and purely working on my mechanics for my personal enjoyment and success in the game. His goal is to develop my pitching mechanics as well as a workout routine into one that puts me into good shape, while keeping my body as healthy as possible in an overall effort to put me in a position where I’m able to compete with everyone on the ball field.

I have been working with Kyle for 2 years now after he was my freshman baseball coach at Roosevelt. My hitting and my pitching mechanics improved drastically, after working with him. I have had no arm pain since working with him and before that I would have arm pain every year. Kyles techniques are based on science which makes it safe and effective.

Kyle works at a slow steady pace to make sure that you are grasping everything. He has other students working with you, which makes it a great atmosphere and the other students help you a lot.

I’m currently lifting with him to get ready for the track and field season. All Kyle asks for at the facility is to work hard and come every time. Kyle uses full body movements based on science to improve your strength and power. They are safe and the very effective. My results since lifting with him are amazing, when I was still playing baseball my bat speed improved and I was a different player, I had taken my game to the next level.

The atmosphere at the facility is great. There are 6 people there consistently and we all work hard for our own goals. We all support each other, and there is a competitive atmosphere to get better. This makes you put as much effort as you can in each workout.

Since working with kyle I have become a different athlete and I can’t thank him enough.

Coach Boddy has improved my weight lifting numbers and has refined my batting mechanics. Since I’ve trained with him, I have hit for more power than ever! Thanks Kyle!!!!
